Thomas Linthorne, played by Peter Strauss, rises to wealth and influence in spite of humble beginnings. His road to success begins after the Civil War when he acquires a vast piece of land. It is on this land that he and his wife Kate, played by Rachel Ward, start their family and begin building a life together. |

Their fortune increases after Lonzo Brewster, played by Hume Cronyn, gives his land to Thomas. however, fate has different plans for Thomas and Kate as Jim, Lonzo's estranged son, returns to his father's land. |

Thomas, charmed by Jim's young, attractive wife Lucille, allows them to live on the property. Thomas, Kate and their three children live in a near perfect world. However, as Thomas struggles to maintain a respectable household, cracks begin to appear in their emotional foundation. The strain takes its toll as Thomas raises his children with questionable values. Under the weight of a belligerent neighbour, an overwhelming ambition and wanton ways, Thomas' marriage begins to crumble. The children upon reaching adulthood abandon him. |
