Bernadette Goes Sapphic

Tense, sexy thriller does Jim Thompson proud
ROSIE O'DONNELL HAS made lesbian moms the media topic of the moment. What perfect timing for Showtime to air the original movie Bobbie's Girl, premiering June 9, which stars Bernadette Peters and Rachel Ward as a couple who suddenly find themselves taking care of a 10-year-old nephew.
Show-tune queens worship Peters, but is she aware of the lesbians who find her luscious? "How great!" she yelps, laughing. "Little by little I'm getting more aware of it, which is lovely."
Peters, who will perform an evening of Rodgers and Hammerstein favorites at Radio City Music Hall on June 19, pulls off a very lived-in sensuality in her on-screen relationship with Ward. "We were very
comfortable with each other," says Peters. "And she's a wonderful actress. We just were, you know?"
Did Peters, whose character is a Broadway baby transplanted to Ireland, have any qualms about playing a lesbian, even in a family-friendly movie? "I was more nervous about playing Jewish," she notes, adding her trademark giggle. "And having to be an actress who read Chekhov."
